Just finished listening to this one. Lots of good info, but you drop one tidbit that I think is wrong, and could actually get people in trouble for distributing spam.

You suggest joining lots of relevant Facebook groups, posting on the group about being an artists looking for source photos, and requesting they send you some (a horse group was the example). This is fine. But then you add that this is a way to build your mailing list because you'll have their email address when they send you the picture.

No no no! There's a big difference between "I saw your request for photos, hope you can use this one" and "Please add me to your distribution list for your newsletter and other promotional material". Sending you a photo is likely not enough to establish a business relationship, and it is definitely not an explicit request to be added to your mailing list.

I'm no lawyer. But I've researched this topic a lot because it's important to stay on the right side of the law when it comes to email clients and potential clients. Adding someone to your email list just because they answered a request for photos is just asking for trouble.

As I have said on the show many times, once you have an email address you need to contact them before you can add them to a large email list. In fact most email marketing services don't allow you to add people. You need to ask them first. At least having their email would enable you to reach out individually and see if they are interested. Sorry I didn't make this clear.

Ah, great! I'm a new listener and haven't listened to a lot of older episodes yet. Good to know.
