Today (or this weekend) is a perfect day to get out of the studio and head in to town to talk to someone local about your art.
I might have confused you. Get out of the studio? Huh? And what do I mean when I say "talk to someone local"? Ideally you could go to a local store, restaurant, furniture store or interior designer. Grab some business cards, your iPad and some photos of your art and walk right on in. Tell them about your art and tell them you would like to sell your art at their business. Expalin to them you are going to help them make money. Just be prepared to pay them a commission (of course) which you can negotiate. It will probably need to range between 20% and 50%. I am going to do it. Seriously, I am. And so are you! And ... I hope we will all come back to this blog post and leave a comment about our experiences. The good and the bad. The serious and the funny. Don't be shy. Just go out there and do it. What do you have to lose?

Over the years I have done this a number of times and usually end up feeling that I am just decorating someone's walls. Although some local artists have had minor success with sales, I find that most locations do nothing to promote the art making the whole idea too chancy.

I think it depends on where you place your art. I have ordered new promotional cards highlighting my art. As soon as they arrive I am heading to a local interior designer and a furniture store. I think they are more likely to be better suited at selling my art!

It does sometimes feel like we are just decorating someone's wall- but the upside is atleast others are seeing our work! You never know what that might lead to! I sure appreciate the push, Leslie! I need it!

I call it making "cold calls", never thought of taking my ipad. Since my art is portable - bookmarks, gift bags, ceramic tiles, garden markers, I usually have a box of my art in the car. I've made spontaneous sales using this method. I'm shy about being "consistent" which can be seen as pushing my "stuff" on new stores. I make phone calls which seems best to inquire if they have any bookmarks in their stores. Dropping by some times works, first open time is best. My "problem" is getting out there, so I've designated a "marketing day" as Thursday. Stay tuned to see how it works out
