Time for a Gardening Update

As you can see from all of my photos the vegetable gardening is doing very well. Everything is growing and so far I have had only two small issues. First, my beets didn't quite take. When I planted them I think I split them a bit too small and only half of them survived. I was able to fix it by adding some slightly larger new beet plants in the open spaces. Pretty simple, eh?

My next battle was pests eating my butter lettuce. If you look at the center photo, you can see the nice holes all over the leaves. Apparently I have (now had) caterpillars. They were cute little inch worms that ate my lettuce (as in a ton of lettuce) in only one day. Hungry little guys! Since my garden is organic I couldn't just run to Home Depot and purchase something to alleviate the problem. Instead I had to meet up with my favorite organic nursery and get the proper "safe" and organic spray. Fortunately it worked and my lettuce is happy again.

I have already harvested tons of herbs, as in basil, cilantro, oregano and parsley. I also have onions that are ready to eat and am enjoying my blueberries and strawberries every day. My blackberries have berries so they should be ready soon too.

Needless to say, vegetable gardening a lot of work. But it is a blast! And I cannot wait for my tomatoes. Can you see the tiny tomatoes in the picture above? Yay!

Tell me about your drip irrigation system. Is it a kit? Has your water bill gone crazy since starting to use it?

I love your planter boxes. So clever and easy to manage.

The drip system was installed by my gardener. It's just a bunch of the soaker tubes, nothing fancy. The garden only gets watered twice a week so it doesn't get any more water than the rest of our lawn. Good thing with our water shortage issue!

I love your blog. I don't usually like reading blogs. But I thoroughly enjoy yours. I am stunned by your ability to get so much accomplished. I worry one of these days you will announce you can't blog anymore.

As for your bug problem. I garden, and found that to help keep the bugs off my lettuce I plant Radishes near my lettuce. The bugs prefer radish greens to my lettuce. Thus happy bugs and a happy me. Thats my organic way of helping my lettuce.

Thank you for all your generosity in sharing all you do. I am a mother of 5 my youngest having finally made it to elementary school. So I've decided it's time to pick up where I left off 20 years ago after my art degree. I quit because, I just got to a point that I was mad at my kids when they needed me and decided.

My job as a mother should be more important than my art career. So I left it behind. I''m raising some pretty great kids! Which makes my retirement worth it but. Honestly I should of kept painting because I feel left behind. But... Now I'm back. I no longer have to worry about kids getting into my paint. Making my pictures or sculptures "better" with there renditions. And with 8 hours of kid free time Its time for me to get back into it
